Our Epilepsy Care
Epilepsy care is central to the Meath’s overall care provision. We employ a full time epilepsy nurse, who works with residents, their families, Meath care staff and medical professionals to ensure the best possible epilepsy care and treatment for residents.
A key component of this is ensuring staff are familiar and confident with every resident’s epilepsy. All new staff attend epilepsy training and senior staff receive advanced training, with ongoing daily support on hand from our epilepsy nurse. She also keeps staff abreast of any developments in epilepsy drugs and treatment options.
The epilepsy nurse and our visiting GP hold monthly epilepsy clinics. Residents can attend the clinic for a review of their epilepsy, or they can register any concerns to be discussed at the clinic on their behalf. The clinics are also used to discuss any changes in residents’ seizures - all observed seizures are recorded on charts and analyzed by our epilepsy nurse.
Many residents are seen at various hospitals by consultant neurologists, accompanied either by our epilepsy nurse or a member of staff, and usually by a family member.
Our care staff are trained to look out for symptoms of toxicity, which can be caused by the combination of drugs taken to control seizures. Our epilepsy nurse and GP are kept informed of any issues relating to AED (anti epileptic drug control).
