Caring for our future

Our Heritage

Our Grade II listed manor house and extensive grounds were left to us by our founder Mary, Countess of Meath.

Mary’s gift of a ‘safe and happy home’ is one that we are extremely thankful for; her gift grew into an over 130-year legacy which has enabled us to provide generations of vulnerable adults with the best care possible in a wonderful home.

As responsible custodians, we must look after this gift, so that The Meath can provide a safe and happy home to vulnerable adults over many years to come. In order to achieve this, we have launched The Meath Capital Appeal.

Our main building

Our historic main building, dates from the 17th Century and was once home to General James Oglethorpe who founded the state of Georgia, USA. In 1891 The Countess of Meath set about adapting the house to suit her vision of a home for people who lived with epilepsy. Over 130 years later, we need to future proof our beautiful home by caring for the fabric of the Grade II listed building. Large sections of the roof need replacing, along with further external works, including the replacement, or repair of windows. Our planned works will honour our heritage and remain in keeping with the historical house, while ensuring that we continue to deliver the best care possible with all modern comforts.

Having been a supporter of the charity over many years, I am privileged to be President of The Meath Capital Appeal. This appeal enables The Meath to future-proof their facilities and services for vulnerable adults over many years to come. The Meath receive no statutory funding for the upkeep of their buildings. Funds raised through the Capital Appeal will not only enable the charity to preserve their historic Grade II manor house, but will also enable their residents, who live with complex epilepsy and disabilities, to enjoy more comfortable accommodation through the use of latest technologies to keep them as safe as possible.

Please join me in supporting The Meath to care for their future by donating to The Meath Capital Appeal. Thank you.

Future-proofing our home

The Meath Capital Appeal enables us to future-proof our home and services for vulnerable adults over many years to come.

In addition to looking after our historic building, we will upgrade our internal and external systems to provide the safest home and will make sustainable choices where possible. Due to the risks associated with complex epilepsy, the use of modern technologies will reduce the risk to life, and provide peace of mind to staff and relatives who look after our vulnerable residents.

We are now beginning the next vital phase of our appeal which includes the upgrading of CCTV, Fire and Carer on Call safety systems. Finally, as heat is a common seizure trigger, we hope to install air conditioning in the hottest areas. Due to the risks associated with complex epilepsy, the use of modern technologies will reduce the risk to life and provide peace of mind to residents, staff and relatives.

Works to date

We have completed Phase 1 which saw the restoration to the west wing of our building. Phase 2 has commenced and will see the remaining external works to the rest of the our main building completed by Autumn 2024.

What is the cost of not caring for our future?

The last major investment in our main building was 30 years ago. To ensure that we continue to provide the very best level of care these works are now essential.

Testimonial

“My son’s epilepsy means that he requires regular 30-minute nighttime checks and around the clock care. I’m so happy that he has the support and care of the team at The Meath. An upgraded carer on call system, would support the care staff to prioritise help and respond as quickly as possible when needed, giving my son and myself added peace of mind.”
